Choose the anniversary you are writing for
A wedding-day capsule for your first anniversary captures the beginning. A capsule made on an anniversary for a later year records what the relationship has become. If the celebration is next week, you can still make a gift: write about this year and choose an instant keepsake or a scheduled opening on the day.
Agree on whether the letters are just for the two of you or part of a family celebration. Each partner can keep a personal letter separate from the shared photos. Do not assume every message in a shared digital collection has a separate audience.

Written after the wedding, to open on the first anniversary
Dear Jules,
It is the morning after our wedding. There are still flowers in the sink, and neither of us knows who took home the blue serving dish. I keep remembering the ten minutes we spent outside before dinner, sharing a glass of water and laughing because we had barely spoken all afternoon.
I have saved the photo your brother took then. It is slightly crooked, but it looks like us. I want to remember that being together did not need an audience or a perfect room.
When we open this next year, I hope we have found a few ordinary things we enjoy doing together. I hope we have learned how to say we are tired before an argument becomes about the dishes. I would like us to keep making time for the walk with no destination.

Dear Morgan,

A fill-in anniversary letter template

Write separately if you want the letters to be a surprise. Read for tone before sealing: a future anniversary is not a good place to store a complaint that needs a conversation now. Leave private material out of anything you plan to show at a party.

Year one
- Record a joint voice note recapping your favorite date nights.

Year five
- Film a short interview about where you imagine life in five more years.

Record an ordinary-life interview
Take turns answering a few questions in a short voice note or video. You can give different answers without choosing a winner. Add names and the date at the beginning so the recording still makes sense on its own.

- What did we handle better than we would have a year ago?

Assemble the reveal in five steps
- Set one opening date. Choose the anniversary or a quieter day nearby when you will have time together. A capsule does not need multiple reveal stages.
- Choose a small set of files. Include the letters, photos with captions, and one recording. Keep original paper keepsakes separately and photograph or scan them for the digital collection.
